BAPTISM

The next step for people who have placed their faith in Jesus for salvation is to follow his example and be baptized.  Baptism is an external picture of an internal change. It represents what has already taken place in the life of a person who becomes a Christian. Continue reading for more information about baptism, including answers to questions like: Why should I be baptized?  How should I be baptized?  When should I be baptized?

WHY SHOULD YOU BE BAPTIZED?

  1. It demonstrates your obedience to Christ.
  2. It symbolizes your new life in Christ.
  3. It identifies you with Christ.

HOW SHOULD YOU BE BAPTIZED?

At Gathering Pointe, we baptize people by immersion, that is, by placing them under the water.  We do this because Jesus was baptized this way.

Matthew 3:16 – After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him.

The New Testament was originally written in Greek and later translated into English.  The Greek word for “baptize” means to immerse or to dip under water.  So when the writers referred to baptism, they were literally talking about placing people under the water.

WHEN SHOULD YOU BE BAPTIZED?

Every person should be baptized after they place their faith in Jesus for salvation.

Acts 2:41 – On that day about three thousand believed the message and were baptized.

SHOULD CHILDREN BE BAPTIZED?

The Bible doesn’t forbid this practice, but we do believe the Bible teaches that baptism is separate from the act of salvation. As mentioned before, baptism is a step of obedience that should take place after a person puts his or her faith in Jesus for salvation. If a child is able to understand his or her need for Jesus, and chooses to follow him, that child is ready to be baptized.

At Gathering Pointe, we have a separate time set aside to dedicate children to God. Our goal is to partner with parents as they raise their children in a way that honors God. We will stand with parents and pray for their families as they dedicate their children for the purpose of bringing glory to God.
